google calendar is pitifully slow

Anyone have suggestions for improving performance? I have a google calendar that takes about 20 seconds to process before the page will load. (which seems like an eternity.) We're using the webcal solution as opposed to retrieving the google .ics file and working with a local copy.

as an experiment, I tried grabbing the .ics file and using a local copy instead. But then I get no calendar at all, just an error message saying the file is malformed. Any clues? The calendar is here:
